International Doll Maker Celebrates Black History Month With New Line of Multi-Racial Dolls by Younique Gemz?

Toronto, Ontario, Canada (PRWEB) February 16, 2006

Prominent members of the black community everywhere are offering their recommendations on how to honor and learn more about Black History Month. International doll maker, Younique Gemz™, is celebrating with its inaugural line of multi-racial, multi-cultural dolls. The dolls made their debut this week at the American International TOY FAIR® in New York City.

“Celebrating Black History Month has no borders,” said Debbie Goodland, president and founder of Younique Gemz™. “We surveyed children and quickly discovered what was missing in today’s doll. The children said they wanted ‘a doll that looks like me,’ one that they could better relate to. That’s why we developed this beautiful line of multi-racial dolls that better reflect the growing number of children sharing two or more distinct racial backgrounds — including Black, Hispanic, Asian, and Caucasian.”

“Each doll comes complete with jewelry accessories including earrings, a necklace and a bracelet with a gem name,” said Goodland. The dolls will be officially released and available beginning June 2006.

Complete clothing lines for the dolls are currently being designed by a New York City fashion designer and should also be ready for release by June.

Also becoming available will be a Younique Gemz™ Scrapbook designed to compliment the dolls. The purpose of the scrapbook is to give children and parents the opportunity to share their personal heritage, helping to build a strong sense of self within the child. The front of the scrapbook will have a special section for mapping out a family history. The entire scrapbook will be created with all people groups in mind and will display the many unique aspects of various cultures, traditions, music and foods.

Toronto began celebrating Black History Month in the 1950s, however formal recognition did not happen until the Ontario Black History Society petitioned the City of Toronto in 1978. Later, former Liberal MP Jean Augustine proposed making the Black History Month celebration nationwide — legislation that was unanimously adopted.

“The Younique Gemz dolls vary in skin tones, with realistically painted eyes in different colors and shapes, and facial characteristics that are distinct to two or more people groups,” said Goodland. “To allow for the broadest visual interpretation of the dolls as multi-ethnic individuals and to allow children to identify with the dolls on a personal level, the dolls are not labeled by ethnicity, but with gem names for easy reference.” The names for the inaugural line of nine dolls are Amber, Amethyst, Diamond, Emerald, Opal, Ruby, Sapphire, Topaz and Turquoise.

Hurley, NY (PRWEB) December 19, 2005

Just in time for the December 9th release of Memoirs of a Geisha, the Tonner® Doll Company, Inc., internationally recognized for its superbly crafted, life-like, limited edition dolls, introduces its newest and most remarkable creation – the exquisite Memoirs of a Geisha™ Collection.

“I was thrilled to be chosen as the official licensee for the collector dolls for this film,” said Robert Tonner, CEO and head designer of the Tonner® Doll Company. “The characters are beautiful, memorable, and exotic. It was an honor to have the opportunity to capture the essence of each. I believe both collectors and fans alike will be as thrilled as we are with the final results.”

Spring Dance Sayuri is the first in the collection. A stunning16” tall and fully articulated, she wears an authentically detailed kimono from the film, entitled “Spring Dance.” Noted Tonner, “We had complete access to the costumes from the film, all designed by Colleen Atwood. Spring Dance reflects all of the nuances of the actual costume, meticulously re-created in exacting detail, right down to the tiny bells inside her shoes.”

Already creating a buzz in the collector world, the new collection features dolls based on the characters Sayuri and her mentor Mameha. Creating characters authentic to the movie, the true essence of the geisha is represented in a way no one other than the Tonner® Doll Company could accomplish. “We felt it was important to be as exact as possible, while creating the most beautiful dolls imaginable,” said Tonner.

Tonner’s Memoirs of a Geisha™ Collection will officially debut at Toy Fair in February 2006 and will be found on specialty store shelves, including FAO Schwarz, and other high-end specialty stores nationwide. The entire line will consist of the above-mentioned dolls, a collection of authentic movie costume replicas, and perfectly matched accessories.

Based on the internationally acclaimed novel by Arthur Golden, Memoirs of a Geisha is a sweeping romantic epic set in a mysterious and exotic world that still casts a potent spell today. The story begins in the years before WWII when a penniless Japanese child is torn from her family to work as a maid in a geisha house. Despite a treacherous rival who nearly breaks her spirit, the girl blossoms into the legendary geisha Sayuri (Ziyi Zhang). Beautiful and accomplished, Sayuri captivates the most powerful men of her day, but is haunted by her secret love for the one man who is out of her reach (Ken Watanabe).

Directed by Academy Award nominee Rob Marshall (Chicago) and produced by Lucy Fisher, Douglas Wick and Steven Spielberg, from a screenplay by Robin Swicord, Memoirs of a Geisha features an all-star international cast including Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Koji Yakusho (Shall We Dance?), Youki Kudoh (Snow Falling on Cedars) and Gong Li (Raise the Red Lantern).

Headquartered in Hurley, New York, the Tonner Doll Company, Inc. develops and markets high quality collectible dolls like Betsy McCall™, Mary Englebreit™, Miss America Dolls™, Kitty Collier™, Effanbee Dolls, the popular Tyler Wentworth® line of dolls and fashions, and the new Memoirs of a Geisha™ licensed doll collection.

The Dolls House Emporium Brings Some Miniature Middle-Earth Magic to Derbyshire

Bag End front door

(PRWeb UK) August 3, 2010

“I read the Hobbit when I was around ten years old and was instantly hooked. My Grandma then lent me her copies of The Lord of the Rings and I became completely lost in the amazing story and complex world of Middle-Earth,” explains Maddie. “When we were asked to make a toy as part of our college course, I immediately thought of Bilbo Baggins and Bag End and set about re-creating it. However, I am a perfectionist and what began as a simple hill with a front door, has become a six-roomed house complete with furniture, accessories and a vegetable patch!”

In the end, Maddie decided to base her little corner of The Shire on Bilbo’s Hobbit hole in the film version of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring – as well as on her interpretation of the book and her own imagination! From the gate which bears the sign “No admittance except on party business”, and Bilbo’s desk covered in authentic maps of Middle-Earth and scrolls of Elvish writings; to the Baggins’ family tree, and larder stocked full of food for all those second breakfasts, the attention to detail makes you feel you have fell right into the film set – just on a slightly smaller scale!

From the 1st September 2010 you too can escape to Middle-Earth by visiting The Dolls House Emporium shop in Ripley, Derbyshire. Maddie’s Bag End will be on display for three months in the shop on High Holborn Road, Ripley, giving you the chance to see Bilbo’s Hobbit hole for yourself!

“It really was a labour of love and I have enjoyed every moment of building it,” comments Maddie. “It was a great honour to be asked if I would be willing to display it at The Dolls House Emporium shop in Ripley and by doing so I hope other people will get as much pleasure out of it as I have.”

“As soon as we saw Maddie’s Hobbit Hole on our Collector’s Blog we knew it would create a stir! It is an absolutely amazing creation and the attention to detail is incredible,” explains Jackie Lee, Managing Director of The Dolls House Emporium. “We knew Maddie had been asked several times if she would put the house on show, so we suggested our shop as the perfect place to display it. We are delighted to be able to display this exceptional piece of work, and know that our customers will be thrilled to see it !”

You can come and see Bilbo’s Bag End at The Dolls House Emporium shop, which is open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day – and with complimentary tea and coffee, a relaxing reception area, and a beautiful range of Junior and Collector’s dolls’ houses from The Dolls House Emporium, why not make it a day out for the whole family? For further information, please call 080 00 11 44 22.
