Ten Houses Filled with Leaves

($ 11.00) ISBN: 978-0-8059-6120-1, paperback

Part of a child’s maturation is forming a personal identity and, after deciding what “kind” of person they want to be, coming to grips with reality both from within and without as they make their way in the world.

Meet Maisi Waverly, a young Black girl who is lighter skinned than most of her counterparts as well as exotically attractive, garnering the attention of both adults and her peers, although sometimes this attention is unwarrantedly negative.

Nevertheless, Maisi seems to form friendships with the most unlikely of people, primarily because she is quite secure with herself and her identity. She refuses to be a party to society’s forms of suppression and flaunts her independent and free spirit as she sticks to her morals and takes care of business.

“From the mouths of babes…” or, in this case, from the lives of babes we can learn so much about being ourselves and becoming comfortable in the skin in which we were born, as shown by Tina Marie Lockhart through the life of Maisi in Ten Houses Filled with Leaves.

First Ever Second-person Future Book, ‘You Will Behave,’ Makes Literary History

First Ever Second-person Future Book, ‘You Will Behave,’ Makes Literary History

Gaithersburg, MD (PRWEB) November 3, 2005

SuckerPunch Press has made literary history by publishing the world’s first ever second-person, future tense book, “You Will Behave,” by Matt Getty. In the groundbreaking novella, Getty accomplishes a literary feat many, including a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, once thought impossible.

“You Will Behave” is told from the perspective of an angry mother chastising her son for raping his sister’s Barbie Doll with Darth Vader’s light-saber. She reprimands him for the crime of playroom passion and then goes on to tell him his entire life story. The result is a dark and uproarious tale of love, violence, and what little difference there is between the two — told entirely in the second-person future.

“It’s astounding, really,” says SuckerPunch Press Editor Jack Brickman on the history-making book. “It’s a much needed shock to the literary world. The whole thing is ‘you will this’ and ‘you will that,’ and it never comes off as a gimmick. You just go along for the ride.”

Critics and authors agree. Esquire calls “You Will Behave” “breathtaking.” Not an Exit (www.notanexit.net) editor Bret Schlyer recommends the novella as “quite funny.”

Richard McCann (www.richardmccann.net), author of Mother of Sorrows says, “Remarkably inventive and remarkably funny, Matt Getty’s ‘You Will Behave’ is a remarkably dead-on exploration of what it means to grow up male in middle America, rendered in a prose that’s as sharp and fine as it is original. Matt Getty is the real thing.”

Says SmokeLong Quarterly (www.smokelong.com) editor Dave Clapper, “You Will Behave truly is a sucker punch. Narratively cute, it pulls the reader into an ugly world wherein violence and sexuality are forever intertwined. It questions that link and doesn’t flinch from honest answers. And it doesn’t hurt that it’s funny as hell.”

The idea for the highly acclaimed novella arose when Pulitzer-Prize winning poet Henry Taylor told Getty that it would be impossible to write a story both in the second person and in the future tense. “About two weeks before that Henry also told me that any writer worth his salt would immediately try to do something once he’d been told it was impossible, so what else was I going to do?” says Getty. “Though I can’t really take much credit for it as a literary feat. I came up with a premise that would work, and then ‘You Will Behave’ pretty much wrote itself — I think that’s why it doesn’t seem forced. It’s a story that could only be told this way, and it’s a story that has to be told.”

Matt Getty, the self-proclaimed “world’s best writer ever,” has written fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for Tatlin’s Tower, Poet Lore, The Washington Times, Pindeldyboz, and several other literary magazines. “You Will Behave” is his first novella. A graduate of Gettysburg College, he lives in Maryland and works at American University in Washington, D.C., where he earned his graduate degree. He teaches writing at American University and the University of Maryland University College. For more information on Getty, visit www.mattgetty.com.

An Interactive Addition to Games of Make-Believe
Complete with snuggly kittens and a flowered cloth cover for the bed, this set makes tucking in your child’s favorite dolls more realistic. And the included mom figure adds a new member to the family. The plastic pieces of this bedtime set seem durable, and the lamp on the vanity really lights up when you press down on its shade. The three batteries needed to power this feature are included. And as an added bonus, this set comes with a secret web code to unlock online activities from www.caringcorners.com.

About the Mrs. Goodbee Dollhouse
This set is designed to make a great partner for the Mrs. Goodbee Dollhouse (not included). The unique Mrs. Goodbee dollhouse comes to life when your child first rings the doorbell. Mrs. Goodbee’s eyes snap open, her lips light up, and she sings a welcoming song. As you child plays, eight audio activation points throughout the house keep the experience interactive. In the bathroom, Mrs. Goodbee offers comments like, “Flush, wash, wonderful! Good job.” When the fridge is opened, she may say “Brrrrrrrr” in response to the rush of cold air.

Beyond the great sound effects, the Mrs. Goodbee house is full of thoughtful details that keep playtime interesting. Windows in the bedroom move up and down to reveal different scenes for daytime and nighttime. A lever by the oven reveals muffins, a pie, or a turkey cooking. With its unique fold-out design and six rooms on each side, there’s plenty of space for multiple children to play at the same time. When it’s time to clean up, simply fold the house up with your child’s dolls inside to save space.

Explore the Good Deeds Garden Online
There’s another whole world waiting online at www.caringcorners.com, where little girls can use the secret code that comes with their dollhouse to unlock the good deeds garden. The dollhouse offers children several games and tasks to choose from. Children can try their hand at feeding hungry fish or picking out the differences between two similar pictures.

This feature is not simply designed with fun in mind; it’s also designed to promote responsibility. Every time a child does a real-world good deed, she can take a sticker from the Parent Guide and use it to decorate the back of the dollhouse. Secret codes that unlock additional games are hidden under the stickers, making this a fun and engaging process, and one that encourages positive social behaviors.
